Nearly 30 years after ideation, the newest library branch in Boulder has officially opened its doors. Located on 13th Street in North Boulder and part of the newly formed Boulder Public Library District, the highly anticipated North Boulder (NoBo) Library is one that individuals and families are flocking to. The interior of the 12,000 SF facility goes beyond the traditional library image, with multi-functional spaces dedicated to serving a variety of needs. Library patrons are invited to create works of art in the makerspace, engage in bilingual children’s song and story time, take a Zoom call in one of the private study rooms, host a community meeting in the collaborative workspace, browse the English and/or Spanish collections, or quietly relax and reflect in an alcove.
Not to be outdone, the exterior of NoBo Library offers interactive fun for patrons of all ages. Located on the northwest side of the building, the exterior path to the second floor doubles as a musical walkway. Titled “Nuages,” the interactive art installation features pressure pads embedded in the concrete, triggering musical notes when stepped upon. Individuals can be seen (and heard) turning the act of walking into a melodious tune throughout the day. On the building’s south side is a bright-yellow, two-story slide and outdoor patio area. The slide is accessed by climbing a mesh net, adding to the library’s cheerful and whimsical design. Future outdoor amenities include an accessible playground and covered overhang.
